Share gay facebook. While each character in Euphoria brings their own individual complexities to the show, the way in which queer people’s identities is examined is groundbreaking because being queer isn’t their main character trait.

I’m not saying characters can’t be flawed — hell, almost every Euphoria character is low-key a terrible person — but Cal, the show’s main representation of gay men, is one of its biggest villains. From the get-go in Euphoria, Cal is depicted as a violent and sexual monster who records his encounters with young boys and transgender women one of whom turns out to be year-old Jules without their consent.

How Euphoria season 2 plays into harmful queer tropes. But the trope is problematic: it depicts queerness as something negative that, when exposed, finally gives the villains their comeuppance. The only confirmed gay male character comes in the form of a violent, predatory middle-aged man, who hoards videos filmed nonconsensually.

Complex portrayals of queerness. Would it not have been more interesting if Euphoria had chosen to explore the reasons behind straight male toxic masculinity through Nate and Cal rather than making it about being or worrying about being gay?
